A Port Richey man is facing drunk driving charges after authorities say he ran over a toddler with his motorcycle and subsequently left the scene.
Troopers of the Florida Highway Patrol say the 63-year-old man was driving his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the evening of February 17 on Oak Crest Drive when he struck a 2-year-old girl with his motorcycle at around eight o'clock.
Investigators say the child was among a handful of other children playing basketball in the street at the time. Upon striking the child, witnesses say a female riding along with the suspect screamed at the entire assemblage, which soon included the injured child's parents.
The suspect and the agitated female then boarded the motorcycle and fled, per witnesses at the scene. Deputies from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office say they saw a pair matching their description arriving at a house a block away. Upon querying the duo, deputies say they denied involvement in an accident. However, officers say both individuals smelled of alcoholic drink, and the suspect's eyes were bloodshot and his legs were unsteady.
The Dayton, Ohio native was arrested at his home and transported to the Pasco County Jail, where he was booked early the next day on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident. He posted a $5,500 bond later that day and was released.
The female passenger was not charged in relation to the incident.
The 2-year-old victim was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital. No word was given on her condition in local media.
