Alleged Theft Of Leaf Blower Leads To Attempted Murder Charges For New Port Richey Man

gun-780082_640.jpgThe alleged theft of a leaf blower led to a car chase, a shooting, and attempted murder charges against a 42-year-old New Port Richey man last week.

According to Pasco County authorities, the man identified a truck he believed belonged to a man who had stolen his leaf blower and began pursuing it. Telling investigators that he did not want the alleged thief to escape, he followed the truck through town.

Along the way the suspect said he saw a passenger within the truck aim a firearm at him, prompting him to produce a gun of his own. Investigators say the man loosed two rounds at the truck as they drove on Sea Forest Drive near Marine Parkway.

Deputies say he again pointed a firearm at the truck, startling a driver who found himself between the two vehicles, whom investigators say he narrowly missed with a subsequent shot. The chase continued, with the occupants in the pursued vehicle attempting to flag down law enforcement while escaping from the suspect.

The chase ultimately ended with the suspect's apprehension. The man he pursued, a 26-year-old Ruskin resident, was struck in the leg by one round, necessitating a trip to the hospital. He was subsequently arrested on charges of grand theft, possession of methamphetamine with the intent to sell, and possession of a controlled substance. He remains in custody at the Pasco County Jail in lieu of a bond of $14,000.

The pursuing suspect was booked into Pasco County Jail on three counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault. The Puerto Rico native remains in custody in lieu of a $1,055,000 bond.
