St. Pete Woman Facing Manslaughter Charge After Accidental Firearm Discharge Allegedly Slays Friend

handgun-231699_640.jpgA 21-year-old St. Petersburg woman was charged with manslaughter last week after authorities say she inadvertently discharged a firearm and killed her 17-year-old friend as a result.

Police say the defendant was in her vehicle near Central Avenue and 58th Street when, at around half past two o'clock on the morning of December 23rd, she accidentally discharged at least one round from a firearm. Per police, the round struck her 17-year-old friend in the back.

The defendant caught the attention of police shortly after the incident, and an EMS unit transported the now-wounded friend to Bayfront Health hospital for treatment. However, the wound proved too severe, and the victim expired at the hospital.

Meanwhile, police say they advised the defendant of her Miranda rights, and she confessed to firing the fatal shot. They say she did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the alleged shooting. A 20-year-old man was also present in the vehicle, but they have not named him nor released any part of his story relative to the events.

The defendant, a native of New York, was taken into custody and booked into the Pinellas County Jail at around dawn that day. She faces a single count of manslaughter and is free after placing a bond of $10,000.

Pinellas County authorities continue to investigate the event, saying that they have yet to locate the weapon allegedly used in the crime. Police have not released the variety of gun they believe was used, who owned it, or whether the gun was legally owned at the time of the shooting.
