OFAC Designates Two Syrian Militias And An Iranian Airline For Alleged Ties To Terrorism

iran-1151139_640.jpgThe United States government levied sanctions last week upon a pair of Syrian militias and a civilian airline it says is involved in shipping weapons to Syrian militants.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated the Fatemiyoun Division and Zaynabiyoun Brigade last week after alleging them to have given material support to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force, which itself was designated by OFAC over eleven years ago.

Per OFAC, the Fatemiyoun Division, which is composed of Afghan nationals, and the Zaynabiyoun Brigade, which is made up of Pakistani nationals, take advantage of refugees in their respective countries, recruiting them for assignments as support troops in Syria and threatening them with arrest and/or deportation if they do not comply. OFAC says the groups recruit males as young as 14, and their activities have triggered a wave of refugees risking life and limb to seek asylum in Europe.

In addition to sanctioning the regimes above, OFAC also designated Qeshm Fars Air, an Iranian airline it says has a business relationship with Mahan Air, which was previously designated by OFAC. The Office says Qeshm Fars works in conjunction with Mahan Air by providing two Boeing 747s for use in transporting men and material to combat zones and the bodies of slain fighters back to Iran.

As a result of this designation, the designees are legally prohibited from exercising their rights to property in the jurisdiction of the United States, and Americans are forbidden from conducting business with the named parties.
