OFAC Sanctions Associates Of Nicaraguan President Ortega Over Allegations Of Human Rights Abuses

panama_flag-2529000_640.jpgThe Federal government last week levied sanctions against two members tied to the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega over allegations that the duo are responsible for death and destruction throughout the country.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issued designations for Vice President of Nicaragua and First Lady, Rosario Maria Murillo De Ortega, and national security advisor Nestor Moncada Lau, alleging the pair of dismantling the Nicaraguan government and looting its treasury.

Federal investigators say Ortega, with whom her husband Daniel Ortega she shares half of the presidency's power, has significant access to and influence over the Sandinista National Liberation Front's (FSLN) Sandinista Youth organization and the Nicaraguan National Police (NNP). Per investigators, both organizations have been complicit in substantial human rights abuses, including operating death squads that conduct extrajudicial killings, torture, and kidnapping. In addition, the Sandinista Youth are alleged to have committed human rights abuses as well, largely against individuals protesting the Nicaraguan government.

OFAC alleges Moncada to be Ortega's liaison to various parts of the Nicaraguan government, and has been tasked to deliver orders from the president. They say he has organized and paid counter protesters as well as bribing and blackmailing individuals to obtain silence or cooperation against dissident groups. Moncada is also alleged to have aided Ortega in hiding a sexual relationship he is said to have had with a minor.

Thanks to these designations, Ortega's and Moncada's assets in the United States are frozen, and they are legally prohibited for exercising ownership rights in any sort of property. In addition, United States citizens are forbidden from conducting business from the duo.
