Pinellas County Deputy Fired After One-Car Wreck Yields DUI Charges

A now-former Pinellas County deputy is facing DUI charges after fellow deputies say he initiated a one-car crash in Dunedin.

Per the deputies, Corporal James Robert Miller was driving his personal vehicle on August 25 when he apparently lost control of it, striking a telephone pole and tree at around 3 A.M. that morning. Deputies say they discovered Miller within the mangled auto, and he displayed signs of drunkenness including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and emitting the smell of alcoholic drink.

Deputies say they led Miller thorough field sobriety tests, but his performance throughout was less than optimal. They then arrested Miller, noting that he was compliant throughout.

Miller was subjected to blood alcohol content tests, which deputies say returned results of 0.124% and 0.121%. Both results exceeded Florida's benchmark for alcohol impairment, which is 0.08%. He was subsequently booked into the Pinellas County Jail under a count of DUI with property damage. Miller was released shortly afterward upon posting a bond of $500.

Prior to his arrest, Miller was a 16-year veteran of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. He was assigned to the office's Patrol Operations Bureau, but, per Sheriff's Office policy, was terminated upon his arrest for DUI.
