OFAC Designates Thai Aviation Firm For Supporting Previously-Designated Iranian Company

The Federal government last week enacted sanctions against a Thailand-based aviation firm for acting on behalf of an Iranian airline already under sanction for allegedly supporting terrorism.

On Friday the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated My Aviation Company Limited for allegedly acting as its General Sales Agent (GSA) in its home country of Thailand.

OFAC alleges My Aviation of providing cargo service to Mahan Air, which OFAC previously accused of delivering cargo and soldiers to the Syrian government under the control of Bashar al-Assad. The U.S. government alleges that the regime has carried out and continues to commit gross human rights violations against its own people, which it says Mahan Air facilitates by providing a trio of flights to Syria.

Per OFAC, My Aviation provides freight booking, freight forwarding, and passenger booking for Mahan Air even after the U.S. government warned the firm that continued business relations with Mahan Air may lead to sanctions.

Mahan Air was designated by OFAC in 2011 for allegedly aiding Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), an entity that was itself designated in 2007 for allegedly supporting a number of terrorist groups. Per the U.S. government, Mahan Air transported men and matériel for IRGC-QF, and has done the same for Hizballah, which itself was designated by OFAC in 2001.

As with all such designees, My Aviation is now legally prohibited from exercising rights in any property within the jurisdiction of the United States, and parties who knowingly conduct business with the firm are themselves subject to similar sanctions by OFAC.
