St. Pete Man Sentenced to Quarter Century in Prison for Federal Heroin Trafficking Conviction

Heroin_aufkochen.jpgA St. Petersburg man will be spending the next decade and a half in federal prison on drug-trafficking charges, as prosecutors say he moved 30 kilograms of heroin into the area over a year and a half.

William Harold Wright was sentenced last Friday to a 25-year prison term on his January conviction, representing himself in both precedings. Federal prosecutors say he flew to Tampa monthly from a second home in California to oversee the logistics of his heroin operation.

At his trial, prosecutors introduced into evidence surveillance footage they say depicts Wright and a second man moving a large crate of heroin hidden by a kitchen vanity into the garage of his home. They also aired recorded phone conversations between Wright and others in which plans for the drug's distribution were discussed.

The 55-year-old Florida native maintained his innocence throughout the trial and sentencing phases, stating that the federal prosecutors were "delusional," and that his conviction was grounded in "lies."

Though he represented himself for the entirety of the proceedings, U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore suggested he use legal counsel on appeal, a suggestion he earnestly accepted.
