Alleged Wrong-Way Collision Yields Drunk Driving Charges for New Port Richey Man

A New Port Richey man is facing drunk driving charges after state troopers say he drove his car the wrong way on U.S. 19, ultimately leading to a head-on collision with another driver.

Per the Florida Highway Patrol, Rashad Xavier Wesley was driving his 2001 Lexus sedan around dawn on May 2 when he found his way onto the highway’s southbound lane heading in a northerly direction. They say he proceeded in this manner until he came to Darlington Road, when he allegedly encountered the 2000 Chevrolet driven by James Swope.

Authorities say Swope was stopped in the southbound turn lane when Wesley’s vehicle struck it head-on. Though belted in, both drivers sustained injury, and both were transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Wesley’s injuries were minor, but police say Swope’s injuries were more serious.

Upon his release from hospital, FHP troopers apprehended Wesley and ferried him to the Pasco County Jail. The 21-year-old native of San Diego was booked on counts of driving under the influence, DUI with property damage, and DUI accident with injury. He was released later that evening after posting a bond of $11,500.
