A Plant City man was arrested last week and is now facing homicide charges for a fatal accident Hillsborough County authorities say he initiated in the late summer of 2015.

Christian John Ryburn was sixteen years old when authorities say he was driving his 2008 Nissan Altima with Devon Wilson in the passenger seat at a high rate of speed eastbound on I-4 on the morning of August 2.

Witnesses say that, in addition to allegedly speeding, Ryburn was rapidly changing lanes and forcing other drivers to take evasive action. Investigators say that rainy weather conditions that evening exacerbated the danger as well.

The situation all came to a head at around half past eight that morning, when authorities say Ryburn suddenly lost control of the vehicle and skidded into a guardrail on an overpass. The impact sent the guardrail through the passenger-side door, inflicting instantly fatal injuries upon Wilson and serious injuries upon Ryburn.

Ryburn was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center with severe injuries to his limbs and was at one point in danger of losing one of his feet. There was no word in local media accounts regarding the degree to which Ryburn recovered nor why prosecutors declined to file charges before now.

Ryburn, who lists his occupation as a barber at a prominent chain of barber shops, was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide and driving without a valid driver’s license, resulting in death. He is currently being held on a bond of $27,000.
