Collision with Pinellas Deputy Nets St. Pete Man DUI Charges

police-935279_640.jpgAn alleged collision with a Pinellas Sheriff's Office vehicle and a subsequent flight from the scene led to charges including drunk driving for a man from St. Petersburg.

Pinellas County investigators leveled such accusations against 37-year-old Anthony James Hanna, alleging that he was piloting his 2000 Buick Regal in the vicinity of 28th Street N and 62nd Avenue in the late evening hours of January 5 when his vehicle struck a police cruiser driven by Deputy Darryl Martin.

According to investigators, Hanna's vehicle didn't stop after the crash, and he allegedly proceeded to his home a short distance away. Witnesses to the crash followed him home, alerting authorities who arrested him a short time later.

Deputies subsequently performed a blood-alcohol test on the Ohio native, allegedly recording results of 0.036% and 0.039%. Both results are less than half that at which the state of Florida presumes impairment. However, another battery of toxicology tests were carried out, and their results were still pending at the time of reporting of the incident.

Deputy Martin, who sustained minor injuries, was briefly hospitalized and released the next morning.

Hanna was arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail early the next morning on one count of leaving the scene of an injury accident, one count of DUI involving property damage, and one count of driving under the influence. He was released the next evening upon posting a bond of $5,500.
