A bodyguard for pop star Justin Bieber was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after authorities say he caused a car wreck that injured two law officers.
Miami-Dade police say a Chevrolet Tahoe rear-ended a department cruiser in the early morning hours last Thursday while both traveled down a Miami divided roadway. The police vehicle contained two Miami-Dade officers who say they witnessed the Tahoe continue on across the median and travel a distance along the road in the wrong direction.
Another set of officers broke away from a call and stopped the Tahoe, which they say was driven by Michael Arana, the head of security for Justin Bieber. According to those officers, the 32-year-old Arana displayed signs of impairment, at which point they requested back-up from a DUI unit. They say Arana declined to participate in sobriety tests, at which point he was arrested.
The two officers in the police cruiser Arana allegedly struck were injured, according to their department. The officer behind the wheel was treated for injuries to his back and released, and the officer in the passenger seat was airlifted to a local hospital and was in stable condition according to the department's press release.
Arana was charged later that day with DUI and leaving the scene of a wreck with injuries. He was not reported to have sustained injuries, and his custody status was not reported upon by local media.
