Polk County Woman Faces DUI Charges After Allegedly Riding Her Horse While Intoxicated

Riding a horse while in a state of intoxication may be a crime in Florida, and a Polk county woman is accused of doing so by deputies in that county.

According to witnesses, Donna Marie Byrne was riding her horse near a busy county roadway last Thursday in a state those witnesses classified as that of inebriation. Sheriff's deputies were summoned to the scene, and they say Byrne appeared "confused and possibly in danger" upon their arrival.

Deputies continued by saying that they conducted a field-sobriety test on her and subsequently took her into custody. They say she was unsteady on her feet, had bloodshot eyes, and gave off an odor of alcoholic beverages.

A test for blood-alcohol content was carried out upon her arrest and allegedly yielded results of 0.157% and 0.161%, both of which were above the Florida standard for intoxication, which is 0.08%. She was booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of DUI and animal abandonment and is currently being held there in lieu of a bond of $1,000.
