Four-Hour Standoff with TPD Leads to Aggravated Assault Charges for New Tampa Man

A four-hour standoff with police netted a New Tampa man aggravated assault charges last week after police say the man whom they feared may harm himself fired upon officers.

Tampa police say they received a report last Wednesday afternoon that thirty-two-year-old Austin John Story was discussing harming himself and others. According to responding officers, the allegedly armed Story retreated to his apartment upon their arrival.

Officers say Story refused to cooperate by leaving his residence, necessitating a response by the department’s tactical team. The team proceeded to cordon off the area and initiate contact with Story, but they say they were unsuccessful.

Failing to establish communication with Story, the tactical team then attempted to flush him out by using a gas canister in his residence. Police say Story responded by firing at the officers, who themselves responded in kind. All parties weathered the exchanged unscathed, and Story exited the residence a quarter-hour later without arms and was apprehended.

The California native was booked into Hillsborough County Jail that evening. A system engineer for a major defense contractor by trade, Story is being held in lieu of a $30,000 bond on four counts of aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer.
