Tampa Man Sentenced to 5-1/2 Years in Prison on Federal Money Laundering Charges

A Tampa man was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in federal prison last week after admitting in January to laundering money for financial hackers.

Anthony R. Murgio wept as he told a U.S. district judge in Manhattan that he made significant mistakes in judgment, leading him to become involved with a fraudulent bitcoin exchange that processed ransom payments extorted from victims of ransomware. He pled guilty to three counts of conspiracy involving bank fraud and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business.

Murgio was one of several individuals investigators say was involved in the scheme that allegedly netted the conspiracy millions of dollars from ransomware victims who were instructed to pay hackers in bitcoin. Authorities say the conspiracy, which ran from 2013 through 2015, also involved the takeover of a now-defunct New Jersey credit union, which they say would have made tracking their crimes even more difficult. Murgio's father pled guilty to a charge of obstruction last fall in relation to the attempted takeover.

U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan sentenced Murgio to a term of roughly half the length sought by prosecutors and recommended by sentencing guidelines due to the generosity he showed friends and the support he has received from family members in the course of proceedings. Prosecutors sought a sentence of between ten and 12-1/2 years, which is consistent with federal sentencing guidelines.

Murgio remains free on bond and is next expected at court in September to participate in a hearing regarding restitution and forfeiture.
