A Tampa man with a significant history in the Florida prison system was arrested last week, accused of a shooting death at a Busch Gardens hotel.

Tampa police arrested Christopher Lee Carithers in front of an East Tampa residence on Thursday after tips from the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force named him the prime suspect in the slaying of Yasmine L. Tyson earlier in the week.

According to police, the 37-year-old Carithers fired the fatal shots at Tyson, whom officers found wounded after being dispatched to a local motel Monday evening. She was unconscious when they found her alone in a room at the motel, and paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital shortly after they arrived. Their efforts were in vain, however, as Tyson succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival there.

Though police gave few details of the alleged crime, they believe that the violent act was not random.

Carithers was booked into Hillsborough County Jail shortly after one o’clock last Thursday, charged with one count of felon in possession of a firearm and one count of manslaughter with a weapon. He is currently being held in lieu of a $37,500 bond. Carithers has been to prison five separate times since 1999 for convictions including aggravated battery, grand theft, grand theft auto, and cocaine possession.
