Allegedly Inebriated Plant City Man Faces DUI Manslaughter Charges After Running Red Light and Striking Motorcyclist

Troopers of the Florida Highway Patrol say a Plant City man was legally intoxicated when he piloted his vehicle through a red light and fatally struck a motorcyclist.

Jorge Alberto Mejia Perez was driving his Nissan Maxima westbound on Knights Griffin Road in the pre-dawn hours of July 3 when he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of State Road 39. Authorities say that Robert Eugene Shook was driving into the intersection from SR 39 when he and his motorcycle were struck by Perez's vehicle.

Though the 74-year-old Shook was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, his injuries proved fatal, and he expired at Lakeland Regional Health medical center.

Meanwhile, troopers say Perez attempted to flee the scene on foot, necessitating a short chase ultimately ending with his capture. The 52-year-old native of El Salvador was booked into Hillsborough County Jail early the next morning on charges of DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and driving without a license and being involved in a fatal accident. According to jail records, his blood-alcohol content was measured twice at 0.105%. He is being held in lieu of a $117,000 bond.
