Spring Hill Man Charged with Elder Exploitation After Alleged $100K Theft from Father

A Spring Hill man was arrested late last month and returned to Hernando County over a year after a warrant was issued for his arrest on allegations that he stole over $100,000 from his father.

Vincent James Caliendo was arrested in Lexington County, South Carolina on May 30 as the result of a Crime Stopper tip. Authorities say Caliendo obtained power of attorney over his father Bernard, who is suffering from the early stages of dementia. They say bank records indicate a large volume of small transactions initiated in March 2016 leading up to Vincent's withdrawal of $100,863.67 from Bernard's account, issued in the form of a cashier's check, on March 29, which they say was subsequently deposited in Vincent's account.

Investigators say the bank's records indicate expenditures from Vincent's account at restaurants, hotels, retailers, gas stations, car insurance, and cell phone service. None of which, they say, were spent on goods or services benefiting Bernard.

In addition to the above alleged expenditures, investigators say Vincent attempted to obtain a reverse mortgage upon Bernard's residence in an effort at gaining access to the home's equity. They say that the loan progressed to the issuance of final paperwork for execution, but the paperwork was sent to Bernard's home, allegedly prompting Vincent to attempt to burgle the residence. They say he ultimately failed at his attempt to obtain and execute the documents, but they say his signature would have been of no effect due to the fact that the power of attorney he possessed over Bernard had been rescinded at that time.

The 39-year-old Vincent was booked into the Hernando County Detention Center on June 11 on charges of exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult and grand theft. He is currently being held in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
