Murder Charges for Man Who Allegedly Shoots Girlfriend at East Tampa Filling Station

Little is known about the circumstances that led to the alleged attack, but Tampa police say that an armed altercation between a man and his girlfriend left her dead and him the perpetrator of her murder.

Officers of the TPD were called to an East Tampa convenience store in the first hours of June 18. Upon their arrival they say they discovered the mortally-wounded Metosha D. Godwin. Though they administered aid, their efforts were ultimately in vain, as she expired at the scene. However, TPD officers say they identified their suspect almost immediately, and tracked down Sol William "Freddie" Hoke forty minutes later and eight miles away.

Hoke was arrested after an hour-long standoff with police. Although relatives knew of his felony record, which includes possession and sale of cocaine, robbery, and flight from police, they told local media that the violent conduct of which he is alleged to have engaged in was absolutely unforeseen. The fifty-year-old Godwin had been dating Hoke, who was eleven years her junior, and, despite the usual disagreements among couples, Godwin's family say they knew of nothing in their relationship that might have led to bloodshed.

Likely to mark his fortieth birthday there next month, Hoke was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on four separate charges - first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, driving with a suspended license, and possession of less than twenty grams of cannabis. He is being held without bond.
