A New Port Richey woman was mostly tight lipped after being arrested for an allegedly near-fatal domestic assault police say she committed last week – though they said that she did open her mouth long enough to spit at one of their number.

Deputies from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office were called to a hotel on Green Key Road just west of US 19 late last Wednesday to investigate a disturbance reported in one of its rooms. They say that they encountered a man in the lobby who had been stabbed in the chest. Officers applied pressure to the wound until an ambulance arrived to stabilize the unidentified man and transport him to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Media reports indicate that the man was placed in serious but stable condition upon his arrival, and that he was being treated for a collapsed lung.

Shortly afterward the deputies came across the man’s girlfriend, named Paula Ann Brandt and another witness to the stabbing. They say Brandt had blood on her hands, arms, face, and clothing, and blood covered a knife found in her room as well.

An interview with the witness found with Brandt agreed with statements made by the victim. Both indicated that Brandt was the victim’s significant other, and that the cohabiting couple were engaged in an argument immediately prior to the incident. Brandt was significantly less forthcoming, they say, responding to questions by an investigator by spitting in his face.

Brandt, who hails from Michigan, marked her twenty-sixth birthday earlier this month. She’s currently being held in lieu of a $85,000 bond for attempted murder and battery on a law-enforcement officer.
