Former Michigan Police Officer Charged with First-Degree Murder in Alleged Shooting at Oldsmar Bar

A former Michigan law enforcement officer was arrested last Wednesday, accused of shooting to death a cook at an Oldsmar bar and restaurant.

Deputies of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office say Brian Paul Mytych shot David Brown early Wednesday morning, possibly continuing a fight that began on February 6. Mytych was arrested that day on suspicion of disorderly intoxication after allegedly shouting racial slurs at musicians performing at a bar on Forest Lake Blvd. at State Street West. An altercation ensued between the 43-year-old Mytych and the 33-year-old Brown, leading to Mytych's arrest and ban from the restaurant.

According to witnesses, Mytych, who is listed on jail booking records as Caucasian, returned to the bar Wednesday morning and was subsequently told to leave by management. He complied, but returned with a .45-caliber pistol and shot Brown, who was also Caucasian, the witnesses say. Brown did not survive the encounter, expiring at the scene before emergency services could arrive. Brown then allegedly ordered the remaining customers to leave, contacted law enforcement, and stayed at the scene until police arrived.

Mytych was a police officer with the suburban Detroit city of Westland until three months ago. His thirteen-year career in law enforcement ended due to an off-duty health issue according to a statement released by the department.

Mytych was booked into the Pinellas County Jail at half past eight o'clock Wednesday morning on one charge of first-degree murder. He is being held without bond.
