Alcohol Suspected in Crash that Killed Brandon Man

Officers of the Florida Highway Patrol say that the man piloting a vehicle that ran a red light and struck another and killed its occupant was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Twenty-eight-year-old Johnathan Nicholas Honza was arrested just before three o'clock on Friday upon his release from Tampa General Hospital, accused by police of running a red light at the intersection of E Adamo Drive and Falkenburg Road around three A.M. on Wednesday and hitting the vehicle driven by Dontae Jamal Hill.

Police say that his 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS struck the twenty-five-year-old Hill's 2005 Acura TSX with such force that the Acura split in half. Debris from the crash hit another vehicle in the intersection as well, but the five people within were uninjured.

Both Honza and Hill were taken to Tampa General with serious injuries - Honza was released to the custody of the FHP on Friday, but Hill's injuries proved fatal. According to a police spokesperson, troopers smelled alcohol on Honza, who exhibited behavior at the scene consistent with intoxication.

Florida records indicate that Honza had an in-state identification card, but no driver's license could be located. He was suspected of DUI in 2013 after allegedly striking a curb in his vehicle, but charges relating to that incident were reduced to reckless driving. He was arrested for DUI twice in Oregon, records show, but he did not attend hearings at court for either set of charges, resulting in a pair of active bench warrants from that state. Records also show another outstanding warrant related to minor-in-possession charges as well.

Honza is being held without bond at the Hillsborough County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, and driving without a valid driver's license.
