Detectives from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office have been sent over eight hundred miles to the west to retrieve the prime suspect in a murder committed earlier this week.

Forty-three-year-old Keith Earl Davis was apprehended in Sulphur, Louisiana yesterday, mere hours after a warrant for his arrest was issued. Davis will be returned from the city, which is on Interstate 10 about twenty miles east of the Texas-Louisiana border, to Hillsborough county to face charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a weapon, and grand theft.

According to Tampa police, Davis is responsible for the untimely death of William Leslie McGoff, a fifty-three-year-old Wellswood resident whose body was found within his ransacked home on Monday. McGoff’s remains were discovered by police who were called to his residence on a welfare check after he did not report to work. Police say that his Hyundai Sonata was missing from his home as well, and point to witnesses who place Davis in the vehicle in locations in Louisiana and northern Florida.

Friends and relatives say that McGoff, who was a long-time hospice nurse at the time of his demise, was also active in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, having recently celebrated a decade of sobriety.

Detectives told local media that Davis’s family is cooperating with them as they investigate his alleged connection with the murder. Although McGoff’s friends and family know of no connection between him and Davis, authorities say that the two most likely were acquainted.

Davis, who celebrated his forty-third birthday earlier this month, has been arrested several times in the state of Florida. He has been a guest of the Florida Department of Corrections four separate times, and is currently under supervised release for convictions in 2010 for trafficking in stolen property and providing false information to a pawnbroker.
