St. Petersburg Police Officer Facing DUI Charge After Nearly Losing His Job for DUI Conviction in 2009

A police officer of the St. Petersburg Police Department was arrested on suspicion of DUI last week, seven years after a previous DUI arrest that led to his abstinence from liquor consumption to save his job.

Thirty-six year old Officer Anthony Mathew Green was discovered asleep at the wheel of his private vehicle by officers of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office at Gulf Boulevard and Madeira Way just before 11 P.M. last Monday. Responding officers said his eyes were "glossy" and that he was unable to keep his balance. Green refused to submit to a breath test and a field sobriety test. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail around half past three the next morning, and he bonded out just before five that afternoon. A representative from Green's department retrieved his duty firearm and vehicle after he returned home.

At a press conference held while Green was in custody, St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway told the media that Green will be suspended without pay and that his case would proceed through both the criminal court system and the department's internal affairs division. Holloway informed the assembled media representatives that Green was "not going to be here" should he be convicted.

Green was arrested in mid-December 2009 after allegedly leaving a party and piloting his vehicle into two other cars on his way to his home. He was convicted of a drunk-driving offense, sentenced to probation, and retained his position at the department after he agreed to serve a six-week unpaid suspension and swear off alcoholic beverages for five years. The chief of police at the time said that it was the most severe punishment (short of termination) he had handed out in his nine years at the helm.
