Pasco Man Arrested, Charged with DUI With Minors in Vehicle

John Crawford of Spring Hill was pulled over by Pasco deputies on Sunday night after dispatchers reportedly received multiple calls about a reckless driver. According to the sheriff's report, a deputy saw Crawford's car nearly veer off the road before he was stopped.

After Crawford got out of his car, deputies say he "was having a hard time standing and was appearing as though he was falling asleep." Crawford's 11-year-old and 8-year-old sons were in the car at the time. The older child allegedly told deputies "Dad shut his eyes and we hit a curb. We yelled his name and he woke up."

There was fresh front-end damage on the car. Crawford refused to submit to a breath or urine test. Deputies reported that he told them, "I know I'd fail."

Without evidence of Crawford's blood alcohol level, the State's case will rely on circumstantial evidence such as the officer's observations of Crawford's driving, his demeanor and behavior, his speech, any field sobriety tests performed, any statements Crawford himself, the statements of the children as well as the testimony of the witnesses who called in to the dispatchers.

Crawford was ultimately arrested on a charge of driving under the influence with minors in the vehicle. If convicted (and if it is his first DUI offense), Crawford faces up to nine months in jail and a fine between $1,000 and $2,000. If the children were not in the car, the maximum possible sentence upon conviction would have been six months in jail and a fine between $500 and $1,000.
